Ecologist to Lecture on “Restoring Steelhead to the Santa Ynez River,” Thursday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 pm

The restoration of steelhead and their spawning grounds in the Santa Ynez River watershed will be the subject of a lecture on Thursday, November 19th, 7:30 p.m. at the Solvang Branch Library, located at 1745 Mission Drive. This free program is hosted by the Santa Ynez Valley Natural History Society. The Santa Ynez River once supported one of the largest populations of southern steelhead in Central California. This salmonid fish has largely disappeared from the river, and efforts to increase its numbers and improve its native habitat in the Santa Ynez River drainage have been underway for several years.

The talk by Matt Stoeker will examine southern steelhead natural history and then explore various local issues and strategies related to enhancing the long-term survival of this iconic and once-abundant species.

Stoecker is an ecologist and independent consultant (Stoecker Ecological) who has closely studied the steelhead’s habitats, the historic barriers to its migrations, and the existing salmonid recovery programs in the major watersheds of Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.
